What is a Demolition Approval?
A demolition approval (or demolition permit) is the formal permission required to partially or fully demolish a building or structure. It ensures the work is done safely and complies with:
- Queensland Building Act 1975
- National Construction Code (NCC)
- Local council requirements
How Do I Obtain This Document?
- Contact your local council: not all demolition work requires a permit, so contact your local council to see if your project qualifies for an exemption.
- Locate a licensed building certifier to guide you through the process. You can find one on your local council's website or through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC):
- Prepare your documentation
- Demolition plans showing which parts of the building will be removed.
- Asbestos report, if asbestos is present.
- Site safety plan and waste disposal plan.
- Any other supporting documents required by the certifier or council.
- Submit your application
- Pay the application and assessment fees (fees vary by council and project).
- Assessment will be made by the certifier
- Once approved, you get a
demolition approval certificate.
