What is a Gas Disconnection (Abolishment)?

A Gas Disconnection — also known as a gas abolishment — is the process of safely shutting off the gas supply to your property at the start of the construction phase. It ensures the site is safe for demolition, excavation, or major works. While the meter and supply line remain in place, the gas is turned off and locked to prevent any risk during construction. The gas supply will later be reconnected near completion, ready for final appliances and fit-off.

For some projects where gas is no longer required for the new property or gas is no longer allowed by local authorities, this will be a permanent disconnection. This involves removing the gas meter and supply line from the property. It’s a safety-critical task completed by your gas provider.

Why is it needed?

This step is required to ensure your site is safe, compliant, and free of live gas before works begin. Leaving a gas connection active poses a serious risk of gas leaks, fire, or explosion, and may also breach safety regulations. Disconnecting the gas is often mandatory before your demolition or earthworks team can begin.

How it works

1. Find your gas provider — this will be listed on your last bill or property documents.

2. Contact them directly (via phone, email, or online form) and request a full gas abolishment, not just a temporary disconnection.

3. Provide key details — include your site address, gas meter location, access information, and a preferred date for works.

4. Wait for confirmation — the provider will schedule the disconnection, remove the gas meter and service line, and notify you when complete.

5. Once done, mark this task as complete in Build Buddy.
