What is a Driveway Permit?
A Driveway Permit is approval from your local council or road authority that allows you to construct, modify, or connect a driveway crossover from your property to the public road or footpath. It’s required when your works affect council-owned assets like kerbs, nature strips, or footpaths.

Why is this Needed?
The permit ensures that your driveway is safe, compliant, and constructed to council standards. It protects public infrastructure and helps maintain consistent rules for gradients, widths, and access to roads — especially in new estates or on busy streets.
How it Works
1. Go to your local council’s website. You can also use Google by searching
- “Driveway permit site:[yourcouncil].nsw.gov.au”
- (e.g. “Driveway permit site:liverpool.nsw.gov.au”)
2. Locate the driveway or vehicle crossing permit page. It’s usually found under headings like:
- Roads & Traffic
- Assets and Infrastructure
- Building and Renovating
3. Download the application form or apply online, depending on your council. Example councils:
- Blacktown Council – Vehicle Crossing Application (PDF form)
- Penrith Council – Online application via MyCouncil
4. Prepare the required documents:
- Site plan with driveway dimensions
- Lot and DP number or property details
- Driveway design or engineering plan
- Proof of ownership (if requested)
5. Submit your application as directed (email or online portal)
6. Pay the application fee, typically $150–$400 depending on council. Most councils accept card, online payment, or EFT
7. Wait for council to assess your driveway design. They’ll review gradient, width, proximity to services, kerb modification, and ensure it complies with local crossover standards
Once approved, your builder or concreter can proceed with the driveway crossover works.
