Select 'Do it Yourself' to Proceed with This Task

Tiger Tails can no longer be quoted or arranged through the Build Buddy platform. This task must now be marked as ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) to unlock the next steps.

You’ll need to contact your Local Electricity Network Provider to check whether Tiger Tails are needed for your project and arrange installation if required.

What are Tiger Tails?

Tiger Tails are bright, flexible protective sleeves that are temporarily installed on overhead powerlines to make them more visible and reduce the risk of accidental contact during construction. They’re a crucial safety measure when powerlines run close to scaffolding, roofing, or other high-up works.

Your Local Electricity Network Provider will arrange for an accredited electrical contractor to install and remove these. They are often required before construction work can safely begin near powerlines.

Why Are Tiger Tails Important?

Tiger Tails are a critical site safety feature when overhead powerlines are near your construction zone. They serve two main purposes:

  1. Visual Warning: Their bright yellow-and-black design makes powerlines more visible to workers, machinery operators, and trades on site — especially during scaffold erection, roofing, or crane operations where visibility is reduced.
  2. Electrical Safety Barrier: While not a full insulator, Tiger Tails provide a limited layer of protection that can help reduce the risk of accidental contact with live wires. They’re part of broader risk mitigation requirements for working near electricity.

Without Tiger Tails (when required), your site may be exposed to:

  • Serious injury or death from electrocution
  • Fines or work stoppages due to non-compliance with electrical safety regulations
  • Delays in scheduling high-risk work until safety is confirmed
