What is an Electricity Disconnection?
An Electricity Disconnection is the process of safely deactivating and removing the electricity supply and meter from the property before major works begin. It is usually required before demolition or excavation, and ensures the site is fully de-energised and safe for contractors.

Why is this Needed?
This step is essential to ensure your site is safe and compliant before construction. Leaving the site live could result in electric shock, fire, or damage to electrical infrastructure, and may breach WHS regulations. Disconnection is a standard safety requirement before demolition.
How it Works
1. Identify your electricity provider — this will be listed on your electricity bill or contract
2. Contact them directly via phone or email and request a permanent disconnection (not just a temporary switch-off)
3. Provide the following details:
- Site address and National Meter Identifier (NMI), if available
- Access instructions (e.g. if the meter is behind a locked gate)
- A preferred date for disconnection
4. Wait for confirmation — most providers take between 5–10 business days to schedule and complete the disconnection
