Review and Understand Your Permit Approvals

Now that you’ve received one or more official permit approvals (e.g. DA, CDC, Heritage, BASIX, etc.), it’s critical that you review them carefully and understand any conditions or restrictions before you move forward.

These conditions may affect your site works, design, or construction staging — so don’t assume that approval means you’re ready to start immediately.

Why This Step Matters

Many permits come with specific conditions you must meet. These could include:

  • Landscaping or drainage requirements
  • Acoustic or privacy treatments
  • Bushfire or flood management conditions
  • Documentation to be submitted before construction begins
  • Specific materials, finishes, or site access limitations

Failure to comply with these conditions can lead to:

  • Delays or stop-work notices
  • Compliance breaches
  • Rejected inspections later in your project

What You Need to Do

1. Read the full approval letter or notice — not just the summary

2. Look for sections marked:

  • “Conditions of Approval”
  • “Required Prior to Construction”
  • “Subject to the Following”

3. Make a note of:

  • Any pre-construction requirements
  • Any variations from your original application
  • Any changes required before you start work

4. Store the document in your Build Buddy Document Library

5.  you don’t understand something, contact your:

  • Designer or certifier
  • Council (if DA)
  • Or the Build Buddy Expert Guidance and Support Team

Once you’ve reviewed your permits and understand your next steps, mark this task as complete.
