What is the General Construction Induction Card (White Card)?

The General Construction Induction Card, commonly called the White Card, is a nationally recognised certification that proves you’ve completed mandatory Work Health & Safety (WHS) training. It is a legal requirement for anyone entering or working on a construction site in Australia — including Owner Builders.

Why is this Needed?

In NSW, the White Card is legally required for all Owner Builders who intend to supervise, manage, or be present on site.

Without it, you cannot apply for your Owner Builder Permit or be involved in site activity during construction.

How it Works

1. Find an approved RTO. You must complete your training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). For a list of recognised RTOs who can offer this training in Victoria, visit WorkSafe Victoria.

2.  Confirm and book your course: CPCWHS1001/CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry

3. Attend the course (usually 6-8 hours):

  • Delivered either in person or by live virtual classroom (Zoom or equivalent)
  • Bring 100 points of ID (e.g. driver’s licence, Medicare card, passport)
  • Complete the training and pass the required assessment

4. When you successfully complete your induction training, you will receive a construction induction card, which is also known as a white card. You need to submit a copy of both sides of your white card when you apply for an owner-builder certificate of consent.

Once Received

Once you've received your General Construction Induction Card, upload it to the Document Library and then click the orange “Mark Complete” button to move to the next step in your construction workflow.
