It's Time to Remove the Tiger Tails!

Tiger Tails are high-visibility insulated covers placed on overhead power lines to protect workers and equipment during nearby construction. Once the relevant works near the powerlines are complete  — such as scaffolding, frame, or roof installation — these covers must be removed.

This task involves coordinating with your Local Electricity Network Provider (e.g.  Ausgrid, Energex, Jemena)  to safely remove the Tiger Tails and finalise any remaining steps, including documentation and payments. You’ll need to stay on top of timing, as most providers only allow Tiger Tails to remain in place for a limited period.

What Does the Local Electricity Network Provider Do?

Your Local Electricity Network Provider is responsible for the safe removal of the Tiger Tails from the overhead power lines once they're no longer needed.

Typically, they will:

  • Review your request and confirm if your site is ready for removal
  • Schedule a time to attend the site and carry out the removal
  • Finalise any outstanding paperwork or invoices

Keep in mind: they won’t coordinate directly with your builder or trades, so it’s up to you to manage timing and site access. If the removal needs to happen at a specific stage in your build, you must plan and communicate accordingly.

If you need more time, don’t leave your extension request to the last minute. Some Local Electricity Network Providers require several days' notice — and may even ask you to submit a new application or pay a fee. Delays can result in Tiger Tails being removed before you’re ready, which could halt your build. Always check your provider’s extension policy early and set a reminder a week before the expiry date.
