What is a Vehicle Crossing Permit?

A Vehicle Crossing Permit is formal approval from your local council to construct, modify, or remove a vehicle crossover — the section of driveway that connects your property to the public road via the footpath or nature strip. It ensures that your crossover meets safety and construction standards before work begins.

Why is this Needed?

This permit is required because all works over public land (like kerbs, footpaths, or nature strips) must be approved by council to:

  • Protect public infrastructure
  • Ensure the crossing is built to local standards and doesn’t interfere with services
  • Avoid fines or delays from non-compliant works

How it Works

  • Type of crossing: new, modified, or removal
  • Description of works (e.g. “New vehicle crossover for residential build”)

4. Follow council instructions to submit your form

  • Submission is typically via email or online upload (follow the council-specific instructions provided in the form)

5. Wait for a response

  • Most councils issue a decision within 5–10 business days
  • You may be asked for further documents or clarification
