What is it?

A Driveway Permit is formal approval from your local council to construct or modify a driveway or crossover — the part of your driveway that crosses public land to connect your property with the road.

Why is this Needed?

A driveway permit is required to:

  • Ensure your driveway complies with Brisbane City Council’s design standards
  • Prevent interference with public infrastructure such as kerbs, drainage, and footpaths
  • Guarantee safe and legal vehicle access to your site
  • Avoid fines or removal notices for non-compliant work

How it Works

1. Visit the Brisbane City Council website: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au

2. Search for "Apply for a driveway permit":

  • Use the search bar on the homepage
  • Click the relevant link when it appears

3. Choose your application type. On the permit page, select “How to apply for Driveway Permit”, then choose one of the two options:

  • Self-Assessment Application
  • Only if your proposed driveway meets all listed criteria
  • Scroll to the “Apply for self-assessment” section
  • Answer all eligibility questions
  • Provide required documentation and submit your application online
  • B. Full Assessment Application
  • For driveways that don’t qualify for self-assessment or involve unique circumstances
  • Scroll to “Apply Online” under Full Assessment
  • Complete the form, attach your documents (e.g. plans, photos), and submit

4. Wait for assessment

  • Council typically provides a response within 20 business days
  • You may be contacted for additional documents or clarification
