What is a Building Approval?

A Building Approval is a set of detailed drawings and specifications that have been reviewed and approved by a registered building surveyor to ensure a proposed construction project complies with building regulations and standards. This approval, formally known as a building permit, is a legal requirement and acts as permission to start construction, verifying the plans are safe and structurally sound.

How Do I Obtain This Document?

  1. Prepare your documents: final construction drawings, engineering, energy rating, title, and any planning permit (if required).
  2. Appoint a private building surveyor. Research and choose a registered private surveyor, or ask council to allocate one.
  3. Lodge your application. Submit your plans and documents to the surveyor.
  4. The surveyor checks compliance with building regulations and may request changes or extra reports.
  5. Once everything complies, the surveyor issues your Building Permit, giving you legal approval to start work.
