What is a Building Permit?

A Building Permit in Victoria is official permission from a registered building surveyor that lets you legally start construction on your property. It ensures your plans meet safety rules, building codes, and legal standards, may include conditions you must follow during the build, and requires the surveyor to carry out inspections at key stages.

How Do I Obtain This Document?

  1. Determine if a Permit is Required. Visit the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) website to check if your specific project needs a building permit.
  2. Use the "Look up a practitioner" tool on the VBA website to find a registered building surveyor.
  3. You will need to submit at least three copies of your drawings, specifications, and allotment plans.
  4. Provide the completed application form and all necessary documents to your chosen building surveyor.
  5. Pay the building permit levy, which is a fee required for the permit.
  6. Once the application is approved and the levy is paid, the building surveyor will issue your building permit. This permit allows for the construction to proceed in line with the endorsed plans and regulations.
